Kumihimo are said to have started in Heian period and has a history of more than 1000 years. Back in those days, it was used as decorative in shrines and temples or traditional ceremonial court dress (sokutai) for the nobilities, then later it was used for strings to bind armors and weapons for the samurais. Later, its usage had changed to decorative items of clothes such as Haori cords or Obi bands, where numerous designs were created.
There are more than 40 kinds of basic combinations. A wide variety of combinations and affluent color patterns is one of the features of Japanese Kumihimo.
